Unity 6.6 introduces content directories for game asset packaging

Unity’s introductory video describes content directories, an alternative to asset bundles introduced in Unity 6.6. The system uses ScriptableObject root assets to define packaged content and supports loading and releasing individual assets on demand. Unity says parallel loading, incremental builds across multiple processes and automatic deduplication improve loading speed, memory use and build times. Addressables users can migrate through the Groups window. In Unity 6.6, content directories support only local content; remote distribution requires a custom mechanism or continued use of asset bundles.

df_game_data v1.0.1 Adds C Support and Binary File Obfuscation

Alan Wolfe released df_game_data v1.0.1, adding C language support alongside existing C++ support and an option to obfuscate `.bin` files. The option XORs the file with a one-time pad when saving and loading. df_game_data is a solution for read-only game data.

Indie Game Clinic assesses onboarding and clarity in four game playtests

Indie Game Clinic playtests Derelict Scrapper, Grave Juice, Blunder Construction and City of the Big Rollers. The host finds Derelict Scrapper’s upgrades satisfying but criticizes confusing menus and wrecks that poorly convey spaceship salvage. Grave Juice’s action platforming is engaging, though its web build lags on the host’s machine. Blunder Construction earns praise for combining physics stacking with deck building, alongside suggestions for a more gradual tutorial. City of the Big Rollers offers interesting dice and building interactions but inadequately communicates impending defeat.

Managing unresolved issues in indie game studios

Business and leadership coach Martijn van Zwieten outlines a process for addressing studio problems without clear owners, such as team tensions or stalled publishing deals. He recommends a shared issues backlog, initially populated through a team SWOT analysis, and dedicated time in regular meetings. Drawing on Gino Wickman’s book Traction, he describes IDS—identify, discuss, solve—as a way to establish the underlying problem, gather relevant perspectives and agree on a concrete next step assigned to someone, even when only a partial solution is possible.

Facepunch plans free-to-play transition and human curation for s&box

Facepunch Studios plans to make s&box free-to-play toward the end of 2026 and prioritize human curation of games. Founder Garry Newman cited poor reception, weak retention and discovery problems, arguing that a “Netflix for games” model does not work. The Play Fund now requires creators to apply for approval after Newman said self-enrollment rewarded botting. Facepunch is also moving toward Steam Workshop, starting with maps. Existing purchasers will receive exclusive Steam inventory items, with extras for those who paid $20 rather than $10.

War Robots Executive Producer Discusses Localization and Content Pacing in China

MY.GAMES executive producer Boris Burangulov argues that War Robots benefited from preserving its core mobile gameplay in China while relying on a local publishing partner for cultural and regulatory requirements. Accelerated content releases created balance problems: Chinese players received 14 robots and five Titans in 2025, compared with nine robots and three Titans globally. He says the team remains uncertain whether that faster pace helped retention and now aims to synchronize Chinese and global releases.
