Epic Games Store 2.0: Faster Launcher, Social Layer, and Smarter Discovery

Epic Games is overhauling the Epic Games Store from a dev-first launcher into a player-centric, social PC hub. In this Unreal Fest 2026 session, EGS director Kyle unveils a completely rebuilt, much faster launcher and a redesigned storefront that’s personalized to each player’s history and friends. Native patch notes, player profiles, and long-awaited user reviews are on the way, alongside deeper discovery partnerships. Longer term, Epic is targeting multi-platform shopping and a PC referrer API so studios can finally track which campaigns drive sales.

Speedy Storms and Free Fog: Mirza Beig’s Latest Unity VFX

Mirza Beig is pushing Unity URP’s VFX capabilities with a new high-performance heavy rain technique and a fresh update to his volumetric fog tools. His latest demo uses a fast, quarter-resolution buffer to accumulate multiple transparent particle systems, keeping the rain effect both dense and cheap to render. This work feeds into a broader generic custom renderer solution for URP. Alongside it, Beig’s free AERO 1.7 fog and mist shader and surreal shader experiments offer plenty of inspiration for technical artists.

Unity 6.7 Brings Real-Time Global Illumination with Surface Cache GI

Unity 6.7 (currently in alpha) introduces Surface Cache Global Illumination, a real-time GI system for URP that finally gives Unity an answer to Unreal’s Lumen and Godot’s SDFGI. Instead of baking lightmaps or probes, SCGI computes indirect diffuse lighting on the fly by clustering surfaces into “patches” and ray tracing their incoming light. It supports both hardware and software ray tracing and targets dynamic scenes, from destructible environments to procedural worlds. SIMD Made Simple: A 5‑Step Pattern for Faster Loops

Mitchell Hashimoto breaks SIMD out of the “expert-only” box by showing how most hot loops can follow a simple, reusable 5‑step vectorization pattern. Using a real Zig example from the Ghostty terminal, he transforms a one-line scalar loop into a short SIMD version that achieves up to 4–16x local speedups and around 5x in practice. The post explains lanes, masks, and reductions in clear terms, with no assembly or intrinsics required. It’s a compelling case that every developer—including game programmers—should recognize and exploit SIMD opportunities.
