Built for the 2D Renderer, it uses analytical ripples and a clever “fake surface” mode to create convincing 2.5D water without extra geometry. The system now supports underwater air pockets, currents, debris, floating platforms, underwater views, and dynamic light rays.

Built to be lightweight and fully deterministic, the plugin provides a clean pipeline for custom gameplay physics, experimentation, and network-friendly simulations. It currently supports static meshes, Actors/Components, C++ access, debug tools, and an example map, with more features planned.

Fish, Fireflies, and Frogs: Procedural Creatures with Niagara and PCG

Epic’s Philippe Patient shows how the Fortnite LEGO team used Unreal’s Niagara and PCG to fill biomes with fish, fireflies, and frogs that react to the player without affecting gameplay. He walks through moving from GPU distance-field avoidance to a cheap CPU line-trace system that still looks believable on mobile. By streaming PCG data into Niagara Data Channels, a single Niagara system drives creatures across all tiles. Niagara’s summary view then lets animators and audio designers easily tune motion and sound.
