Indie Game Clinic examines design choices in four cyberpunk strategy games
Indie Game Clinic uses four cyberpunk strategy games to discuss targeting controls, visual coherence, onboarding and upgrade design. The stream covers Firewall’s computer-system tower defense, Out Run Express’s train-based battles, Petal Bots’ robot customization and an unnamed turn-based tactics roguelike built around hijacking cybernetic soldiers. The host argues for introducing core tactical decisions early, offering upgrades that either add complexity or ease difficulty, and linking narrative choices to resource trade-offs.
Luke Muscat outlines prototype testing and challenges of solo development
Luke Muscat, creator of Fruit Ninja and Jetpack Joyride, tests game ideas with prototypes built in roughly 100 hours, YouTube videos and public playtesting. His first solo game, Feed the Deep, is a diving roguelike released on Steam in August 2024. He values solo development’s speed and flexibility but highlights isolation and the need for help with music and key art. He plans roughly five solo games in five years to assess whether the approach is sustainable and enjoyable.

Variance limits of importance sampling for sign-changing functions
Lisyarus derives a nonzero variance floor for standard Monte Carlo importance sampling of functions with positive and negative contributions. The optimal density is proportional to the function’s absolute value, with minimum single-sample variance equal to four times the product of the positive and negative integral magnitudes. The article relates this limit to alternating series in volumetric path tracing and discusses variance reduction through fixed sample allocations by sign and control variates. It also notes that evaluating the optimal density requires knowing its normalization integral.
Simulating spherical planets with tileable textures in Unreal Engine 5
An experimental Unreal Engine 5 technique by technical artist Alina Ledeneva makes a flat card resemble a spherical planet using regular tileable textures. Developed during R&D for Kamishibai Interactive’s upcoming shooter TYBALT, it uses World Position Offset to keep the card facing the camera, stereographic UV projection for apparent curvature, and Blueprint to accumulate texture offsets and rotations. It creates no spherical geometry, and different camera paths ending at the same position can show different texture regions.

BiteMe Games reports Steam review delays and submission changes
Steam’s pre-release reviews are taking up to 12 business days, according to a Steam statement cited by BiteMe Games, which also reports developers waiting longer. Steam attributes much of the backlog to repeat reviews and has added submission checks covering testing, achievements, cloud saves, advertised features and languages. BiteMe Games says Desktop Island remains under review ahead of its planned November 27 release, warning that rejection and resubmission through the same queue could jeopardize that schedule.
Unreal Engine 6 reportedly moving gameplay to Verse and Scene Graph
Unreal Engine 6 will remove Blueprints, Actors and the C++ Gameplay Framework in favor of Verse and Scene Graph, according to attendee YuewuDev’s account of Epic CEO Tim Sweeney’s Unreal Fest Tokyo keynote. C++ will remain in core engine systems. AI-powered migration tools are planned, with details unspecified, while existing projects can continue on UE5, including 5.9 and future 5.x releases. UE6 Early Access remains targeted for the end of 2027.
